My Life Head On

Girls and Guns

The last two evenings I had the pleasure of taking a ladies only introduction to handgun class.  It had been several years since I had even shot a gun and even then never really had much instruction.  My good friend, Bill, is an instructor and asked if I would be interested in taking his new ladies only class.  I thought it was a great idea and brought along a friend as well.  It was a two evening class and covered a good amount of information.

The first night we went over NRA safety rules. We discussed different types of hand guns and did some hands on sessions to look at types of grip and stances.  It was great to get accustomed to what we were going to be doing, before actually doing it.  We also talked a lot about what actually goes on inside a gun.  I personally think this is very important.  There was an excellent animation of the inner workings of both a revolver and semi-automatic pistol when fired.

Last night, was the range portion of the class. We took the last two lanes at the range and were able to load, shoot, and unload. We used a .22 revolver in one lane and a .22 semi-automatic pistol in the other lane under the coaching of the Bill’s daughter, Christie.  While none of us were overly fond of the revolver, it was important for us all to try it out.  Now we know how to use one should we ever have the need too, and also that we prefer the semi-automatic should we choose to invest in a handgun of our own. After getting the chance to experience the revolver, Bill took out his second P22 pistol and added a laser sight to it and a flash light to the other for us to get an idea of some options we might like for home defense.  We were able to turn off the light in the booth and see what shooting with the flash light at night would be like.  It was a very bright beam that would be very beneficial in home defense.

In the last bit of class time that we had, Bill asked Christie to take out her personal defense pistol, a Walther PK380 semi-automatic pistol. It was a very similar gun to the P22 we were all ready using, just a little bigger caliber.  We went through 100 rounds in no time at all and had a blast doing it.

This class is just the beginning. We are intending to progress from this class onto a personal protection in the home course. I am greatly looking forward to the next course.
